New Year Traditions: Here are some you might not know about

New Year has always been a time to commend getting rid of the stuff you'd rather draw a blank from the preceding year and looking forward to some good times in the next year. That's why everyone loves New Year parties. But there are a lot of different ways to celebrate  - have a read of these and then let us know below if you and your family have any special traditions in your house.

Grapes

Eating 12 grapes at midnight on New Year’s Eve is both a tradition and a superstition in Spain. Rare is the Spaniard who will risk poisoning their fate for the forthcoming year by skipping the grapes, one for each stroke of midnight.

Americans may giddily greet the New Year downing a glass of champagne and grabbing a kiss at the drop of the ball. But the first 12 seconds of the Spaniards’ New Year are somewhat quieter and more intense, as everyone moves in eating all 12 of the “miraculous grapes” that symbolize 12 lucky months ahead. In bigger cities like Madrid and Barcelona, people bundle in main squares to eat their grapes together and pass around bottles of cava.

Bells

Now if you like the chimes of Big Ben, you'd love New Year in Japan where the New Year is rung in in style. But forget 12 chimes, in Japan bells are rung 108 times in a Buddhist tradition that is supposed to banish your sins. It's also thought to be good luck to be smiling or laughing going into the New Year.

New Year Card

What better way to start somebody’s New Year than to delegate them well wishes during New Year Card. You can always extend the greeting to reflect on hoping that their Holidays were festive and that the New Year continues to bring them Health, Happiness and Prosperity. It’s a choice and a good one! By sending the New Year Card, you are relieved of one holiday task but still implement the goal of reaching out to others with good wishes and acknowledgement of your appreciation that they are in your life in some way.
